Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are an emerging global health threat, causing chronic and often debilitating lung infections whose incidence and prevalence have risen steadily worldwide over the past two decades. NTM pulmonary disease is associated with persistent cough, fatigue, progressive loss of lung function, reduced quality of life, and significant mortality. The growing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant species underscores the urgent need for new therapeutic options. To address this challenge, CD3 and KU Leuven are developing novel broad-spectrum small-molecule therapeutics that inhibit bacterial RNA polymerase. This innovative approach aims to provide effective treatment across multiple NTM species and improve outcomes for patients with these difficult-to-treat infections.
